Danica McKellar, Blockbuster, and Corey Haim: Buzz Week in Review

If you came of age in the late ’80s or early ’90s, several stories may have really hit home this past week. Danica McKellar, who played the unattainable Winnie Cooper on the sitcom “The Wonder Years,” announced that she was pregnant. Blockbuster, the seemingly unstoppable juggernaut of new releases and late fees, told investors that a bankruptcy may be on the horizon. The stock reacted accordingly. And a private funeral was held for fallen teen idol Corey Haim. Best friend Corey Feldman was not in attendence.

“The Wonder Years” hasn’t been on TV since 1993. And yet, nobody can forget Winnie Cooper. As played by Danica McKellar, Cooper represented the all-American girl next door and romantic interest for series star Fred Savage. This past week, Ms. McKellar announced that she and her husband, Mike Verta, were expecting their first child. News of the impending birth sent Web searches on “danica mckellar pregnant” and “danica mckellar photos” both soaring. Also seeing significant bumps: “danica mckellar math.” Yes, in case you didn’t know, the former object of Kevin Arnold’s infatuation has moved away from acting and toward mathematics. She has several books out that encourage girls to embrace their inner mathletes, as well as another one on the way.
